The practice

Technical work should remain understandable after the consultant leaves.

Northline consultants reviewing a physical systems map in their Chicago studio

Why we formed

Our founders kept seeing competent administrators lose time to unowned session folders, undocumented jump paths, and remote tools configured differently on every desk. The software was rarely the core problem. The missing layer was an operating convention.

Northline focuses on that layer. We observe real work, map the route, test representative cases, and leave behind a field guide that another administrator can follow.

Practice principles

Four rules shape the work.

  1. 01Map the complete route before tuning the client.Endpoint, gateway, identity, protocol, owner
  2. 02Prefer conventions people can explain.Clear names beat clever names
  3. 03Test recovery, not only connection.Host changes, transfer failures, expired access
  4. 04Document decisions and exceptions.Support needs the “why,” not only screenshots

Chicago base, national work

Close enough to the operations floor.

Our studio is in Chicago’s Fulton Market district. We work remotely with teams across the United States and travel for discovery sessions when the physical environment is part of the problem.

Engagements generally run two to six weeks and include scheduled working sessions, a pilot, and a final handoff.
